How to Search Criminal Dockets
Start at Indiana MyCase, the public window into Odyssey case data. Both Putnam Circuit Court and Putnam Superior Court run on Odyssey. They have since October 15, 2018. MyCase shows publicly available, non-confidential cases. It is not the official court record. A cause number is the best starting point for a Putnam County criminal docket. A citation number, party name, or attorney works too.
In the Court field, pick Putnam County and choose Criminal & Citation. Advanced Search lets you filter by open or closed status and by filing dates. Expect a captcha. Know that broad searches get capped. A name can pull up many matches. Narrow it down instead of grabbing the first lookalike as your criminal case.
- Choose Case, Name, or Attorney as the search mode.
- Select Putnam County and the Criminal & Citation filter.
- Enter the cause number, citation, or enough name detail to narrow the result.
- Open the matching result and read the newest CCS events as well as the case header.
- Call the Putnam County Clerk at 765-653-2648 for the official file, an unlinked document, or a certified copy.
Putnam Criminal Docket Prefixes
Every Putnam County criminal case number starts with a court code, and the code tells you which court holds the file. A Circuit Court case reads 67C01-YYMM-TT-######, while a Superior Court case reads 67D01-YYMM-TT-######. The leading 67 is the county code for Putnam. Next comes C01 or D01, which flags the court. Then YYMM gives the year and month of assignment. The two letters after that block mark the case type.
For the type codes, the Indiana Administrative Rule 8 cause-type list is the authority. F1 through F6 cover the current felony levels. MR stands for murder. CM is a misdemeanor, and MC means miscellaneous criminal. Some older felony groups still show up on Putnam County criminal docket entries. IF and OV mark infractions and ordinance violations, neither of which is a felony or misdemeanor case.
The Rule 8 page also lays out the full list of cause-type codes in one visual reference, which makes a handy companion when you parse a Putnam County court docket number.

Codes help route a search. Still, the case prefix and the current CCS remain the safest way to identify the assigned court.
What a Criminal Docket Shows
The CCS is a chronological index of court events. It is more than a charge list and less than the whole case file. Read the case header first, then work through the dated events. A link beside an event may open a public order, but many pleadings, reports, exhibits, and older papers are not linked. Where they conflict, the exact text of an order controls over a short status label.
| Case header | Cause number, court, case type, filing date, status, status date, and case style. |
|---|---|
| Charges | Offense label, statute or class when shown, and count information. |
| Settings | Date, time, judge, location, setting type, and later reset or continuance entries. |
| Bond | Public bond amount or type, forfeiture, warrant, hold, release, or related transaction events when displayed. |
| Outcome | Plea, disposition, judgment, sentence, dismissal, appeal, and later review events as entered by the court. |
MyCase warns that its financial data can be incomplete or stale. Ask the clerk for a current balance and the official disposition. A header marked closed does not say how the case ended.
Putnam Criminal Docket Split
Putnam County has one Circuit Court and one Superior Court. Both hear criminal cases. The current local allocation plan, LR67-2, divides the listed criminal categories between them. Do not assume every felony belongs to Circuit or every misdemeanor to Superior. For a filed case, the cause-number prefix gives the direct answer.
| Channel | Criminal docket role | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Putnam Circuit Court | Cases filed as 67C01, including murder and its assigned share of other criminal categories | 765-653-5315 |
| Putnam Superior Court | Cases filed as 67D01, plus criminal and traffic matters assigned under local rules | 765-653-2658 |
| Putnam Magistrate Court | Assigned hearings under an underlying Circuit or Superior cause number; no separate public portal | 765-301-9197 |
| Putnam County Clerk | Unified filing and official-record counter for both courts | 765-653-2648 |
The official Circuit Court page describes its local criminal assignment and court operations.

A Putnam County criminal docket should be routed by its prefix and the current allocation rule. A guess about offense level is not a safe shortcut.
Stages on a Criminal Docket
A Putnam County criminal court docket begins with a filing or charging event. An initial hearing or arraignment may follow, along with counsel and bond entries. Pretrial events can include conferences, notices, motions, discovery references, plea settings, and resets. After a plea or trial event comes the court's actual disposition. When applicable, a sentencing order follows. An appeal, probation review, correction, or other post-judgment event can extend the CCS. It may run well past the first closed status.
Docket flow: Filing → Arraignment → Bond and Pretrial → Plea or Trial → Disposition → Sentencing → Appeal or Review
A filing is not proof. A reset is not a dismissal. "Disposed" is not a complete outcome. Open the dated order when it is public, and if it is not linked, request the exact order from the Putnam County Clerk.
Putnam Diversion Docket Entries
Putnam County's prosecutor describes pretrial diversion as a 12-month program. Successful completion may lead to dismissal. But a referral entry is not itself the final disposition. Read the CCS for the referral. Look for later compliance or review events, plus the final court action. Program conditions are not a finding of guilt. The official pretrial-diversion page lays out the local program view.

That local source explains the program itself. MyCase and the clerk remain the channels for the public criminal docket and its eventual disposition.
Putnam Superior Court also supervises a Substance Abuse Program. A public CCS may show a referral, probation condition, review, or disposition. Treatment and testing details may stay restricted. The program is not a separate public criminal docket search.
Which Court Holds Criminal Dockets
One office holds the record. The Putnam County Clerk keeps Circuit and Superior files together. So a Putnam County criminal docket search starts in MyCase. Once you spot the cause number, send any scheduling question to the court named in it. A Magistrate hearing stays part of the underlying Circuit or Superior case. Adult Probation and Community Corrections run supervision programs, but neither posts public CCS records.
Walk-in access works during court-office hours. That means Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Mail requests go to Putnam County Clerk, PO Box 546, Greencastle, IN 46135. List the court, cause number, and document name and date. Add plain or certified copies, plus your contact details. Call before you mail any payment. The office posts no copy total or mail procedure.
Transcripts are different. A court reporter, not the clerk, produces them. Ask the court line which reporter covers your hearing. Then give the date, the judge, and the portion you need. The court publishes no transcript fee or turnaround time, so confirm both when you order.
Missing Putnam Criminal Dockets
When a MyCase search comes up empty, the cause is usually small. Maybe the case number carries the wrong court prefix. Or a name filter screens out the match. Older records may predate full online coverage. Confidential, sealed, or expunged cases stay off the public site. Protection-order and juvenile files follow their own access rules. An empty result does not prove Putnam County holds no record.
Work the docket search carefully. Try the exact case number with and without hyphens or leading zeroes. Set the filters to Putnam County and Criminal & Citation, then call the clerk. For an older public paper, ask about the courthouse file, the Microfilm Office, or the Indiana State Archives route. When a filing has no link, give the clerk the event date and document name. Do not request the whole case.
Note: A party may use an Indiana Courts account and clerk-issued access code for eligible documents that ordinary public access does not display.
Public Access and Sealed Criminal Dockets
Indiana treats court records as open unless a law, rule, or court order says otherwise. Public MyCase access never shows every document. Mental-health files, most juvenile material, protected personal information, sealed cases, some investigative records, and expunged matters can be hidden. Some may be withheld entirely. Even a public case header does not make every attachment public.
Key access rules:
Indiana Access to Court Records Rule 1 states the open-access presumption and its privacy and safety purpose.
Access to Court Records Rule 5 identifies excluded records and protected personal information.
Indiana Administrative Rule 9 governs electronic and courthouse access, calendars, and compiled-data requests.
If someone denies you access, ask which rule or order applies. A closed case is not automatically sealed. "Closed" describes status; "sealed" describes access. The Putnam County Clerk can explain the route to an official public copy but cannot release protected material without authority.
Putnam Criminal Docket Reporters
A CCS entry proves a hearing happened, not what anyone said there. Putnam Circuit assigns reporter work by case category. The assigned court can route a transcript request. Include the hearing date, cause number, judge, and the portion of the proceeding you need. No Putnam fee or completion time is posted for transcripts. Confirm both before you order.
Putnam Criminal Docket Files
Think in three layers. The public CCS is the event index. The filed document behind each entry is the actual motion, order, judgment, report, or attachment. A certified copy is a clerk-authenticated version meant for official use. A browser printout is none of these, and a missing online image does not mean the filing is missing from the courthouse file.
Split the work accordingly. MyCase gives you the public timeline. The clerk holds the official case file, current balance, older paper, and certifications. The court reporter supplies testimony or a hearing transcript. That division keeps a Putnam County criminal docket search on track and away from trusting a short status label alone.
Putnam Criminal Docket Balances
MyCase may display fines, costs, bond transactions, credits, or a balance, but its own notice warns that financial data can lag or omit later items. Ask the Putnam County Clerk for the live amount and the court-entered disposition. A payment line is one docket event, never a stand-in for the judgment or sentencing order.
